RV Winter 2023 – Austin

Played a round of golf at ShadowGlen. I wouldn’t say enjoyed just played as I had a horrible round. In addition, a water main broke on the course and it was messing with their fertilizer so they had to water the greens. Of course, the sprinklers would go on randomly, and just about the time we were walking onto the green. Also because of the break, the stench was horrible. They offered us a raincheck but we knew we didn’t have another chance to play so I asked for a couple of free drinks instead. They were more than happy to oblige.

Visited Zilker Botanical Gardens with Cheryl. I really like walking around gardens except I need to do this in the spring (on the way home) not in the fall and winter when there is very little blooming. The butterfly garden and koi pond were nice and I can see when things were in full bloom it would be very pretty.

After we found a place to play bingo. Normally I like the local churches or philanthropic organizations. This was a public bingo but they did donate to local charities. The only thing is they only play 10 games. Each winner gets at least $250 and some games were $700. I was one number away in 4 of the 10 games. As they say close but no cigar.

WOW what a scary day on the golf course. We decided to play Riverside golf course, a muni course. The first nine holes were in rough shape but the back nine got better. As we are playing 3 young men walk across the course, a short while later we hear a ton of gunshots, then we see the 3 young men walk back across (one had a backpack) into the woods. After the gunshot noise (by the way I thought it was firecrackers) I jokingly said if we start hearing sirens we should leave. Within minutes there were police cars surrounding the course and a helicopter circling. I have no idea if the 3 boys were involved or the outcome of the search. I skipped two holes that were by the woods and waited for the remainder of the group to rejoin.

We did the bat river cruise. There are over a million Brazilian free-tailed bats that come out at dusk to eat. Tons of people are on boats and the bridges to see them appear. We were on a boat. We saw a few hundred but definitely not the millions you see in pictures. Apparently they didn’t like the weather. The tour guide did a great job of explaining all the buildings on the riverfront with a great sense of humor.

Enjoyed one last night in downtown Austin before we headed to San Antonio. Arrived on my birthday and John fixed a wonderful steak dinner with a nice bottle of Cabarnet. For the record if I never travel on I-35 again I will be happy. So much traffic, even on the weekends and many slowdowns because of the accidents. The reviews for the park we are in are excellent but warnings of the area surrounding us. Some heard gunshots at night. Yup, first night I here I woke up to gunshots. First gunshots on the golf course now this.
