RV Winter 2023 – Shreveport, Dallas, Austin

John decided he wanted to try a Cajun restaurant in Louisiana. Found a small bar/restaurant with great reviews. He really liked his cajun Alfredo but was disappointed in the jambalaya.

We went for a 4-mile hike at the Red River Wildlife Refuge park. They have a lovely welcome center with information about all the wildlife including venomous snakes and other poisonous creatures. They also claim they have a river rabbit. The most wildlife we saw were tons of grasshoppers and a few butterflies. At least we got in a good walk.

My plan was to go to the driving range after and see if I could work on the correct adjustments from my new driver. It turns out they are closed on Mondays. Heading to Cedar Hills, Texas (Dallas) for a few days.

We arrived at Cedar Hills State Park, a nice state park with full hookups, except for the large barking dog down a site or two and the traffic on the outer belt getting here. It is like we are in the country just south of Dallas’s outer belt. We played golf at Thorntree. The course was at a country club in a million-dollar neighborhood. The fairways were pretty narrow and I haven’t been playing well so really nervous I was going to hit one of those houses. By the second nine, I calmed down and played better. After we went to a dive bar with Kate and Frank and had a great burger. It is amazing that they still allow smoking in some of the bars.

Originally supposed to leave on Saturday but I was reminded that Saturday is football Saturday and Halloween pub crawl night so reservations and departure were changed to Friday. So Friday’s departure turned out to be pouring rain (I need a REAL waterproof raincoat) so I was soaked getting everything ready to leave although I did most the night before) and lots of accidents and wind to add to the rain while driving.

Saturday we went to Armadillo Den and met our friends Peg and Randy and their son and girlfriend for drinks and pick up John’s cigars he had shipped down here. It was funny Peg and Randy said they passed us on the freeway the day before in that horrible rain. After we came home changed into our costumes and headed to a local pub. We ended up finding a bar to watch the MSU/UM game which was a disaster on all fronts.

Went to Wimberley Valley Vineyards. In the morning I was just scanning through Facebook and saw an ad for the top 50 destinations one should visit in your lifetime. It turned out one was 15 miles from the winery, called Dripping Springs and there was supposed to be a really cool Spring there. Well after driving around and googling for 45 minutes we gave up. We found the town but not the spring. Good thing we enjoyed the winery.
