South Dakota (ND too)- 5/26-5/31

Quick update, it wasn’t my husband nibbling on my toes. After setting the trap the invasive hitchhiker “mouse” was caught. We will set another one to see if he had friends. So far so good. I already had dryer sheets everywhere (because I was told before this kept them away), maybe need to replace the “sheets”. I was also told to try minty essential oil drops at “entrance” places. I will also try that.

On the road again and just before it started raining. Good news, the high voltage light didn’t come on today. We are heading north on I-29 and the speed limit is 80, we haven’t seen that in years.

So we choose a campground in Champlain, SD because it is on a river and walking distances to a really cool bar and restaurant and S. Dakota is open for business. Upon our first walk into town, we discover that the bar isn’t open until June 1st for remodeling. The Missouri River is pretty cool though and we rented a pontoon for the gorgeous day and enjoyed our first true warmth and sunshine. So two out of three ain’t bad, oh wait that is the Meatloaf song one out two ain’t bad.

After giving up on any open bars in Chamberlain, SD we finally found one the last night. It even had a casino, which means 4 machines from the 70’s. The good news you can play for hours on $20.

Friday morning we hit the road for Ft. Pierre, SD. I can tell I am getting more comfortable as a passenger because I actually enjoyed the scenery for 20 minutes of the ride. Normally I am on the computer to avoid what I think might be an accident pending with John driving. He actually is a great driver, I am just an anxious passenger. As it turns it I-90 through this section of the country looks pretty much the same so not missing much.

As we are approaching the campground we are going up a really windy road that better end at the site as there is no way in hell we can turn around on this road. So after what felt like an hour (it was only 2 miles), we arrived.

The only 2 states I haven’t been are Alaska and North Dakota. Since we were only 130 miles from N. Dakota, I decided it was time for a day trip in the jeep, much to John’s chagrin. So I drive and found the back roads along the Missouri River until we hit N. Dakota. I originally told him it was about a 1.5 drive however, 3 hours later we hit the state border. I tried going 70 on dirt roads but I slowed it down to about 60. Actually it was a cool ride plus we drove (I think) through a Reservation (res). I wanted to look for Walt Longmire (for those of you fans of this Netflix show). I figured he would have had to leave Wyoming by now because every week there was a dead body and the population wasn’t that big. Didn’t find Walt or Vic so maybe while we are in Wyoming.

After our 5 hour drive to ND we went out for a few drinks in Pierre. BTW the locals pronounce it peer/pier. Apparently we were never on a reservation, so that’s probably why I didn’t find Walt.

5/31 we left for Rapid City for 5 nights. It was a slow start for us this morning, the toilet plugged again and that took me a while to fix (I think it is time for me to trade jobs), the alarm went off on the RV when we started it, still no idea why. We turned off the engine and back on and it went off. The red light on the Jeep when we hook up still comes on, another project. In addition, the one pantry won’t stay shut while traveling so we need to put in a new latch, for now, it is Bungie tied.

We also got a call that the KOA in St. Marys (Glacier) is closed until July 1st due to COVID, so now we have to reschedule parks. We are still trying to stay in that area until Jun 21st and see if the Canada/US border opens for us to go to Alaska or at least Banff.

We will be in Rapid City for 5 days playing tourist.

Since it is the end of the month, I will post our expenses for the first month of living in an RV, this does not include our health or vehicle insurance.
