Iowa to South Dakota- 5/21-5/26/20

While in Iowa, there were some touristy things we would have enjoyed doing like going to the John Deer Museum and shopping in Cedar Falls downtown area. Unfortunately even though the restaurants are now open at 50% capacity most retail stores aren’t open yet and neither are the museums.

So the weather just doesn’t seem to be cooperating. Before we arrive at each destination the report was in the mid 70’s and sunny, when we get there it is more like low 60’s, cloudy and spitty rain. I thought boating turned us into alcoholics, it looks like RVing will be doing the same.

After we unhooked everything we are having the same issue, a high voltage warning, and we aren’t connected to any power other than the inverter. Last time this happened we were told we had a bad transfer switch and we replaced it.

Also, the other item is the alert lights on the tow vehicle are lighting up when we hook up. We had also taken that in to be fixed before this trip. So I called the dealership, they said it is a 5 minute tweek and bring it back in. I don’t think so we are 600 miles away. So he explained to us how to fix it, this will be entertaining. So if it doesn’t work, does that mean instead of towing the Jeep I will be driving it and following John. Actually, in the fall we met a couple that has been full time RVing for a number of years and she always follows him, they don’t tow. They said that is what saved their marriage.

We are at a KOA for memorial day weekend on the corner of Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota. Tons of kids and lots of campers. This wasn’t our first choice however, as we had to rearrange our drive out here we had to take what we could get. All bars and restaurants are open in South Dakota including their version of casinos. Downtown N. Sioux City consists of 2 blocks and there are probably 10 casinos/bars. Machines only, and they are vintage pac man versions on video machines. We went to dinner at the “best” steakhouse in town. Actually my steak was fine however, a little closer to Ponderosa than Ruth Chris.

Saturday we took an 11-mile bike ride to Adams Homestead and State Nature Park in the morning and then a trip to Eagle War Memorial statue up on a cliff and you can see all three states: Iowa, Nebraska and S. Dakota. Monday we drove to Ponca State Park in Nebraska and another view of all three states on a 1.5-mile trail. I even wore my new bike helmet considering my last two falls on bicycles. Now I just have to attach the “rear view” mirror.

Still experimenting with my nails. I am determined to make the dipping method process that I bought work. They chip after just a few days and it still takes hours to get the polish off. So I bought some new remover, we will see if that works. Meanwhile since I have destroyed my nails, for now, I am back to regular nail polish. However, I did find some today that actually dry in 60 seconds.

We are finishing our third week of full time living in the RV. We are adjusting fairly well. I would say my biggest frustration is even though I have a spot for everything, sometimes you have to remove 700 hundred items to get to the one you want. I supposed over time we will arrange things differently.

So seriously we might have a mouse in the RV. I decided I was going to make a loaf of bread with the bread machine today. After all I dragged it 1000 miles. Well, the flour had chew marks in it and sure enough almost everything else that was in a plastic bag did too. Off to Walmart to buy some containers and mouse traps. Seriously wouldn’t the mouse of fallen out while we were driving. I guess I have no idea when it got in, and if we still have it or not. Or maybe that wasn’t John nibbling on my toes last night. Oh, yea, I apparently forgot the water in the recipe and when I woke up this morning, I didn’t have bread but a bunch of flour smooshed together. I did master the convection fast bake for a meatloaf tonight and on my first try none the less.

A view of Nebraska (we are in), Iowa (to the right), and S. Dakota to the north on the Missouri River.

Our campground at KOA N. Sioux City. This was on Friday before everyone else showed up.

SEE I am wearing a bike helmet now. Eagle War Memorial and a few of 3 states from the S. Dakota side.
